Walk along the bustling, crowded, Oxford Street, and turn right – or left, depending on which way you’re going – into Wells Street.
Suddenly all the City hubbub fades away behind you. In fact, it’s as thought you’ve been transported into a Country village!
Go nearly to the end until you come to no. 52, where Monty’s Wine Bar & Restaurant has recently opened.
montys01Monty’s specialises in authentic Italian food, sourced locally and from Italy.
It also has a selection of over 150 wines, with a lot of them from smaller wine-producing regions.
It’s decorated in subdued shades of pale green, cream and grey.
A wine wall greets you as you enter, and there are suspended wine frames scattered around the room.
Emphasis is on sharing, which is a way of eating that I love.
How often do you both order separate dishes, and the other person’s looks nicer than yours? This way, you can try them all!
Their menu does change, so it’s bit different now to the choice that we had.
Chicchetti, or Small Bites, was a choice of
Faoaccia and Carasau Bread, a selection of Italian olives, Classic Bruschetta with Datterino tomatoes, Arancine Siciliane with beef ragu, Buffalo Mozzarells, tomatoes and basil, Zucchini Flower with ricotta cheese and mint, Calamari fritti with tartare sauce, Vitello Tonnato, or Mixed grilled vegetables with smoked scamorza.
montys09We chose the olives, Zucchini flower  (off the menu until it’s back in season) and Calamari.
From the Charcuterie, or Italian Hams selection, we had a Norcia ham which was 18 months old.
Specialities, we chose a salad and Tagliolini fresh crab and bottarga.
As we both fancied a steak but couldn’t manage a whole one, we had Tagliata of Rib eye, cut into thin slices. It practically melted in the mouth!
We couldn’t manage anything from the Cheese board, but I did have a delicious tiramisu.
We were carefully looked after by Antonio the Manager, Daniel the Barman, and Anastasia the Waitress.
At the end of the meal we were introduced to the Chef, who had the romantic name, Dionisio Randazzo.
I did query the choice of ‘elevator music,’ but  Antonio said they were having a selection of Italian music prepared specially for them, but it wasn’t ready yet!
montys02Downstairs is a private room that seats up to 40 people, and about 10 Customers can sit outside if it’s a lovely day of they’re smokers.
Monty’s is a lovely place to relax and eat while on a trip to London. It’s central, and the prices are reasonable. They vary from £2.50 up to £19.50 for a T-bone steak. And most of the dishes are priced around £6.
The staff are all very attentive, and ready to help and advise about anything on the menu that you need more information about.
I shall certainly be popping in there again when I’m in the area!
