Traditionally January was known as the month of the sales, but now it seems the sales are all on before all the presents are placed under the Christmas tree. Indeed the face of shopping and the high street are changing and so are our eating habits.

I was on BBC Hereford and Worcester radio earlier in the week discussing the decline of eating Christmas pudding and the reduction in buying fancy boxes of biscuits over the festive period. It was by no means a lengthy chat, but  having put across my observations regarding how our diets and culinary tastes are changing;  I couldn’t help but  reflect upon how Christmas and New Year celebrations have changed.

I remember there being more definition in seasons and festivities. Christmas was the time that tins of chocolates and fancy boxes of biscuits were purchased, but nowadays it seems there is an abundance of sweet and luxury foods all year round.

As I took a deep sigh at seeing not only Valentines Day cards and trappings in the shops but Easter Eggs just days after Christmas, I also noticed that the big trend in January is not sales, but plant based diets. Indeed the Veganuary campaign seems to have exploded in popularity.

There was a time when diets that limited or excluded meat, dairy products, and eggs were seen as alternative and dining out whilst following such a diet was a nightmare. Identifying as vegetarian, vegan, or plant-based was often viewed as weird and meant you were viewed as an oddity. Indeed to many people saying you didn’t consume dairy or meat meant that you would smell of incense, be wearing multi-coloured clothes and be hippies or activists. However, today plant-based eating is becoming more of the norm as a huge global rise in vegan and plant based eating means that a diet that excludes animal products is no longer niche.

I’ve hardly heard anything about not drinking alcohol this January instead I have seen adverts in everywhere from health food stores to chain pubs promoting adopting a vegan diet during January.

Whilst there is still a long way to go until a plant based diet is considered mainstream it is certain that plant based is the fastest growing food trend of 2020.

One of the usual concerns about following a plant based diet is not getting enough nutrients in particular protein.  Indeed a common myth is that the only wау to соnѕumе рrоtеin is thrоugh meat. Nothing could be furthеr frоm the truth. Whеn wе ѕреаk оf рlаnt-bаѕеd diеtѕ wе аrе rеfеrring tо fruits and vеgеtаblеѕ and the reality is that dishes created without meat or dairy can be delicious, nutritious and naturally alkaline.

With plant based diets becoming less of a fad and more appealing and trendy, perhaps it is time to consider the benefits. In the UK, the number of people identifying as vegans has increased by 350%, compared to the statistics from ten years ago, according to research commissioned by the Vegan Society in partnership with Vegan Life magazine.

My concern when looking at some of these products are that they do not encourage healthy eating and are not always nutritionally rewarding. I would like to see people cooking seasonally and eating good, home cooked, wholesome foods whether they are following a plant based diet or not.

This month there are lots of great fruit and vegetables in season including: Apples, Beetroot, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Celeriac, Celery, Chicory, Jerusalem Artichokes, Kale, Leeks, Mushrooms, Onions, Parsnips, Pears, Spring Greens, Spring Onions, Squash, Swedes, Turnips. However, despite all these fantastic and healthy delights being in season I haven’t heard much about them and plant based diets are about far more than just swapping your beef burger for a veggie one.
