Let’s talk about food! Again. The last article was about what kind of food to try when visiting the Czech Republic. Today I will tell you two grandmother’s recipes. During the writing of this article, I found it very difficult to write these recipes in English. For two main reasons – firstly, some ingredients are not in exact English terms or sold elsewhere, secondly, some traditional recipes are very complex. That’s why I will write here two easier (but still excellent) recipes.

Potato pancakes.

I know. Sounds strange. This is one of the dishes that are terribly strange in English. In the Czech Republic we call them „bramboráky“. I would describe it as a small flat cake of grated potatoes mixed with flour and egg and fried. Which is more or less the whole recipe.

For serving four people you need:

1 kg of potatoes, peeled and washed

2 eggs

about 4 tablespoons of flour

4 large cloves of garlic, wiped salt and pepper

3-4 handfuls of dried (or fresh) marjoram

oil for frying

Grate the potatoes and then in a bowl mix all the ingredients. That’s how you made the dough. Then, as a classic pancake, fry on some oil. You can eat them alone or with some meat. You can also add pieces of ham to the dough. The best thing about this recipe is that it’s super fast, cheap, easy and tasty!

Fruit dumplings

The second recipe will be sweet. Fruit dumplings on which we grew up. We dug blueberries in the forest, brought them to our grandmother, and she cooked us blueberry dumplings.


10 g of yeast

2 teaspoons of sugar

190 ml of milk

1 teaspoon of butter

300 g of “coarse” flour

¼ teaspoon of salt

1 yolk

400 g blueberries

Warm the milk so that you keep your little finger in it, let the other ingredients cool to room temperature. Crumble the yeast and pour a little milk. Add sugar and a handful of flour. Let the quack rise. Sift the flour with salt, pour the remaining milk with melted butter, egg yolk and quack. Make a solid dough, letting it „climb“ under the cloth. . Then divide it into the same parts and fill with blueberries. Let the dumplings rise on the tub under the cloth for about an hour. Then cook in salt water for 6-8 minutes. Drain the cooked dumplings and pierce with a fork. Serve with dissolved butter and sugar.

The advantage of this meal is the possibility of changing fruits. One can be with blueberries, the other with strawberries.
