Following the recent opening of their sixth branch in Kensington, Dishoom now reigns supreme amongst the Indian dining scene in London. Their restauarants are based on the old Irani style cafes of Bombay, reviving the feel and look of these much loved meeting spots for Bombay’s locals.

The Covent Garden branch was the first to open and still remains one of the most popular Dishoom branches given it’s promixity to the West End. Located along Upper Saint Martin’s Lane, Dishoom is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, making this a popular choice throughout the day. For that very reason it is not possible to book in advance for lunch and dinner if your party is less than 6. That’ll explain the long queues that frequently adorn the streets surrounding any Dishoom – but believe me this really is testament to just how worthwhile it’ll be! If you’re an early bird type then you can enjoy a delicious breakfast here before 11am (and you can book spaces for these!!).

For breakfast, the menu has been desi-gned to accommodate western tastes with an Indian twist. Expect to see dishes such as then bacon, sausage or egg naan roll. Freshly baked naan filled with cream cheese, chilli jam and your deli of choice, is a great twist on your basic bacon sarnie. If you’re looking for something with a bit more kick, the Keema Pau serves up spicy minced chicken and livers on a buttered toasted bun, topped with two fried eggs. For a vegetarian alternative, the Akuri offers three spicy scrambled eggs served on top of two toasted buns. The perfect way to kick-start your day. But if you’re looking for the showstopper of the breakfast menu, the Big Bombay presents diners with a high quality full English. Think streaky bacon, Shropshire sausages, masala beans, plenty of Akuri and a host of grilled tomatoes and field mushrooms. The perfect choice for those with a big apetitie or those wanting to sample a bit of everything! If you’re feeling something a little lighter, then the house granola or fruit with yoghurt is a delicious option to start the day. To wash this all down with the Breakfast Lassi is a creamy yoghurt mix of bananas, mangoes and oats. For something a little lighter, there is a selection of fresh fruit juices to try.

If you don’t fancy rolling out of bed early enough to catch Dishoom’s breakfast, then their all-day lunch and dinner menu is an absolute must! Okra fries, vegetable samosas, bhel chaat and vada pau, are just a few of the starters available to snack on whilst you decide on your mains. Alternatively, far far is a great light snack to accompany a few beers if you don’t fancy a substantive starter. Some of Dishoom’s signature main courses include the matar paneer, the ruby chicken and the black dhaal. Plus, each Dishoom branch offers a varied Chef’s Special. At the moment, Covent Garden are offering the Malabar Prawns in a spicy curry. It’s pricy but worthit. All of this can be washed down with a great selection of cocktails. Ask your waiter/waitress for recommendations. They know the menu inside out and will be able to make suggestions based on your personal tastes.

If you’ve managed to save room for dessert after all that, Dishoom’s take on the Eton Mess is a personal favourite of mine. Finished with rose syrup, it’s perfectly crunchy and sweet. For chocoholics, there’s the rich chocolate pudding served with a scoop of cardomon ice cream. The contrast between hot and cold serves as an interesting twist.
