The Dalai Lama together with U.S. actor Richard Gere are in Australia on a twelve day visit as part of his Holiness trip down under. Gere, who is a devout Buddhist joined the spiritual leader touring the Blue Mountains, Brisbane, Uluru and Perth. Gere said his Holiness would be giving “very high teaching, experiential, something extraordinary – so it is worth coming this far”. His Holiness will be teaching at a Buddhist retreat in Leura, The Blue Mountains, for five days. The Tibetan spiritual leader will talk on the wisdom of forgiveness and compassion during his ‘Ocean of Wisdom’ tour, which is his tenth visit to this country. Richard Tiffany Gere began acting in the l970s, born in Philadelphia, and had intended to become a Minister. Gere often named as the “sexiest man alive”, became interested in Buddhism when he was in his twenties. He studied Zen Buddhism and is an active advocate for human rights in Tibet, he is permanently banned from entering The People’s Republic of China because he supports the Tibetan Independence Movement.

The Blue Mountains is a rugged region west of Sydney in Australia’s New South Wales, and known for dramatic scenery, it encompasses steep cliffs, eucalyptus forests, waterfalls and villages dotted with guesthouses, galleries and gardens. Katoomba, a major town in the area, borders Blue Mountains National Park and its bushwalking trails. Echo Point affords views of ‘The Three Sisters’ a sandstone rock formation and the most spectacular landmark. According to Aboriginal dreamtime legend has it that the three sisters ‘Meehni’ ‘Wimlah’ and ‘Gunedoo’ lived in the Jamison valley as members of the Katoomba Tribe. These beautiful young ladies had fallen in love with three brothers from the Nepean tribe, yet tribal law forbade them to marry. The brothers were not happy

to accept this law and so decided to use force to capture the three sisters causing a major tribal battle. As the lives of the three sisters were seriously in danger, a Witch doctor from the Katoomba tribe took it upon himself to turn the three sisters into stone to protect them from harm. While he intended to reverse the spell when the battle was over, the witch doctor himself was killed. As only he could reverse the spell to return the ladies to their former beauty, the sisters remain in their magnificent rock formation as a reminder of this battle for generations to come.

Where better than this beautiful unspoilt region to contemplate, meditate, and dream, a touch of magic and myth. Walk the Jamison Valley’s giant staircase, you will need to be sure footed and not afraid of heights to go either up or down the giant staircase located close to the famous ‘Three Sisters’, with ample opportunities to stop along the way and admire the magnificent scenic parts of the valley. The Blue Mountains are so named because they look blue. They are clad in vast forests of eucalypts commonly known as gum trees, which in the hot sun discharge a fine mist of eucalyptus oil from their leaves, the mist refracts light which makes the haze look blue at a distance. The Dalai Lama and Richard Gere are sure to return to this beautiful location.

For those that like thrills and spills Dream World on the Gold Coast in Queensland is the place to go. It is Australia’s largest Theme Park with over forty rides and attractions including five roller coasters. The Park is made up of several Themed lands: Ocean Parade, DreamWorks Experience, Wiggles World, Gold Rush Country, Rocky Hollow, Tiger Island, and The Dream World Corroboree. Famous for fun in the sun with long sandy beaches, it is an ideal place for the school holidays.

Here at Shelly Beach all is well with the birds enjoying their morning feasts, a recent arrival in the garden is a large garden lizard, these guys are pretty shy and no problem as he probably won’t stay for long. Pixie now has her own carry bag which she sits in and is carried around like a Princess, which she is. We had a lovely time at the beach taking in the winter sunshine, and an enjoyable lunch at the surf club. “Letters of a Travelling Lady, Wallis The Woman I Love, The Complete Guide to Painting and Decorating Porcelain,” are available on Amazon and my website do have a look.

Cheers. Patricia.
