Nestled around the corner from Prague’s centrepiece Old Town Square, Lehka Hlvava (meaning ‘clear head’), is pioneering the free-from dining scene in the Czech capital, offering a menu that is entirely vegetarian, and most importantly – delicious!

As their website states, ‘sit back, relax and allow your senses to be immersed in the delightful display of colours, tastes, smells and sounds’. Situated in a 500 year old building, this vegetarian haven is entrenched in history and the owners have gone to great lengths to maintain the authenticity of this hideaway. The interior design of the restaurant is a collaboration of three artist’s works, right from the table and walls, to the upholstery and magic mushroom lamps.

Service is friendly and personal. You don’t feel rushed to order or to quickly clear the table, which means you can take your time dining here. It’s not just the food, but the whole experience and ambience that makes Lehka Hlava a winner in my eyes!

I would recommend booking online in advance. I did, and it paid off as the restaurant was otherwise full to capacity (although this was on a Saturday night, so I’m not sure how busy they’ll get other days of the week). The dining area is cosy and intimate; perfect for a romantic meal or a calming escape from all the hustle and bustle outside.

Our waitress was happy to make suggestions to us on what to order, based on yur tastes and preferences. For starter we ordered the eggplant tartar with olives and toasted bread. The tartar itself was very impressive – packed full of flavour, yet light and fresh. We were conscious of not getting too full from the starter but this was the perfect serving to share between two.

For mains, we first ordered the tagliatelle served with tempeh, spinach and mushrooms in creamy sauce. The pasta can be made vegan by swapping the parmesan cheese topping for their vegan alternative. This was my first time trying the acclaimedvegetarian superfood ‘tempeh’. A soy-based product originating from Indonesia, similar to tofu but with a slightly meatier texture. It was certainly a welcome and filling addition to my dish.

Next, we ordered the seitan roast, served with red cabbage and potato dumplings – a vegetarian spin-off of a classical Czech dish. Seitan is another buzzword vegetarian superfood, which is a great meat-substitute if you’re looking for something with a bit of bite. This dish was oozing with flavour and was comfortably filling without the stodginess of a typical roast.

Now for the stars of the show – the desserts. These were simply fantastic! The home-made peanut butter cheesecake had a melt-in-your-mouth sensation – I wish I’d ordered another one to go! Next up was the raw almond-chocolate cake served with whipped cream. Both desserts were perfectly sweet without being too overbearing on your tastebuds. There was something quite natural and earthy about both of them which made you feel less guilty about tucking in!

Whilst Lekha Hlava do not sell spirits, they do have a great selection of premium wines and beers to choose from. We opted to test out some of their whole-leaf teas instead. The jasmine tea yin hao if the perfect tummy tonic to have before your main meal, whilst the lung ching green tea is a great addition to your meal to aid digestion
