Word KINDNESS written on wood block, stock image

I love words and whilst I frequently lament about the decline of the modern vocabulary, my interest in words at moment is very much focused upon the connection between positive words and positive mindset.

I recently came across an emotional detox course that explained the concept of emotions being energy in motion, in this course it touches upon the idea that the language we use can change the path of a persons  entire day.

I must say that I have always placed great store by the old saying, ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it’ , but it turns out that this piece of advice is much more than a piece of advice about courtesy and good manners, because words have the power to move, encourage, enlighten and educate, yet can also disturb, anger, dishearten and hurt. As the language we choose to use can actually deplete or restore energy levels, so it is wise to choose your words wisely.

Indeed studies have now shown that positivity in terms of the words that you use day-to-day is one of the best ways to improve your state of mind.  It has been proven that using positive words can reduce stress levels and can have positive effect on both the speaker and language recipients.

It is amazing how many negative words creep into daily conversations and it’s only when you become aware of them that you can change them. I really recommend writing down all the negative terms and words you use in a day, it is quite a revelation.   Having noted the negative trigger words and swapping them for positive ones has made a huge difference to how I feel at the end of a day, so I would recommend giving it a try.

To get started avoid using negative trigger words such as:

argue

bad

but

careless

complain

dangerous

debt

defect

delay

difficult

doubt

effort

error

fail

fault

however

liability

mistake

marked

must

not

never

obvious

problem

reject

sadly

should

stop

terrible

unfortunately

waste

wrong

And replace the negative words with positive words instead, these include words such as:

benefit

bonus

bright

clear

easy

effective

energy

ensure

fast

focused

now

please

powerful

save

simple

strong

By changing your words, you are changing your mindset and adopting a positive attitude can really alter how your words are received and the results they achieve.  It’s a simple shift in choice of vocabulary, but it can make a great difference to your outlook and energy levels at the end of the day.
