Have you seen the movie Mamma mia! Here we go again? For me, as a lover of Mamma Mia !, it was always a great dream to fly to Greece for a holiday. And since dreams come true, this summer I really visited Greece.
I have always been drawn to the Greek culture. Just take it – beautiful nature, long history, such names from history or sport, food, Greek mythology and much more. For a person like me it’s very fascinating.
The question “Where is the best place to go to Greece?” unfortunately I can not answer. However, I think that it depends on what you are looking for. And everybody in Greece can find something good right for him. We chose Crete as a destination. Why? It will come to us that we can find something from everything here. From beautiful nature and Greek culture through history and entertainment.
What places to see in Crete?
- History: Knossos Palace and Heraklion Museum
Whether you are a lovers of history or not, this is a necessity when visiting Crete.
Knossos – the largest mining palace, built around 1900 BC, was destroyed several times by an earthquake and rebuilt, stretching over an area of two hectares. Sir Evans excavations uncovered a complex of buildings up to four-storey, a labyrinth of corridors, halls and staircases. In ancient times, it was the seat of the king of Minoan, and probably the home of the mythical Minotaur.
What really surprised us was the fact that some columns or buildings were re-builded. And that the pavement was concrete. I think it’s the destruction of a 4,000-year-old monument. Anyway, this place has its own atmosphere. I recommend visiting the museum in Heraklion before. Admission to both objects will cost you € 16 (which is cheaper than buying separately). You can go by bus from the center of Heraklion. They will take you directly to Knossos.
- Beaches: Balos and Gravmousa, Elafonisi
Beaches are beautiful in Crete! And what’s even prettier, it’s the sea. In my life I did not see the prettier color of water. For everything so pure! In addition to classic beaches, we also find unique places here.
PS: At Elafonisi beach there is pink sand.
- Cities: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion
As for the cities of Crete, do not expect any big city. Or you know, THAT BIG city. These 3 are those I visited. Cities honestly did not impressed me as much as the beaches and the sea. But my favorite is Heraklion, which is also the capital of Crete. Walking through the shipyard and the historic center was great. Plus, there is the already mentioned museum. Yet most people prefer Chania. This town also has its magic, especially in the evening. Here I was most impressed by the harbor. There is also a large marketplace where you can get almost everything.
