Jewelery of the Pardubice Region: Introducing my region!
When I met Lynn, I promised her to write (among other things) about my region – the Pardubice region. So I will fulfill my promise and present to you my series of articles: The Jewelry of the Pardubice Region. In today’s article, I will briefly introduce you to the basic facts you should know about the region I live in. In the others I will focus on specific places, people, history or events of all kinds. So let’s get started!
The Pardubice Region is a “higher territorial self-governing unit” located mainly in eastern Bohemia. But also some cities (Svitavy and Moravská Třebová) extends to the historical territory of Moravia. The population of this region is 505 285 citizens and the area is 4 519,00 km². The region is divided into four districts: Pardubice, Chrudim, Svitavy and Ústí nad Orlicí.
The main river here is the Elbe. In Pardubice, you can ride along this river with a cruise ship called Arnošt.
If you are more interested in winter sports, the Pardubice region also has a lot to offer.
In the Orlické Mountains there are the ski resorts Deštné v Orlických horách, Říčky v Orlických horách, Olešnice v Orlických horách and others. Also worth visiting is the popular tourist lodge of Masaryk at Šerlich. There are excellent blueberry dumplings in the restaurant. And there is a border with Poland so you can move from one state to another in one step.
Throughout the mountains, a belt of fortifications built before World War II stretches to defend Czechoslovakia against the expected attack by Germany. Lovers of modern history will surely have a wonderful experience.
In Litomyšl city you can visit a unique cultural and architectural monument in the form of a chateau. This jewel of renaissance architecture, outstanding mainly with sgraffito decoration of facades and shields or gorgeous arcades, was included in the UNESCO List of Cultural Heritage.
When we mentioned Litomyšl, we must not forget to mention the festival of classical music “Smetana’s Litomyšl”. This event takes place every year at the beginning of summer holidays since 1949. Last year’s average attendance is between 15 and 20 thousand spectators.
Among other cultural events worth mentioning are the Great Pardubice (famous cross-country steeplechase run in Pardubice since 1874), the Golden Helmet (the traditional annual motorcycle race on a flat-track which has been held since 1929, it is the oldest race on flat track in the world) or Chess open (one of the biggest chess tournaments in Europe).
We also have excellent gingerbread!
