Local hospital radio station, Anker Radio is raising money to continue it’s good work by organising another fabulous show – ‘Thank Abba For The Music’ Ann Evans finds out more.

Anker Radio, the dedicated hospital radio station at Nuneaton’s George Eliot Hospital is staging a fantastic ABBA show, featuring Thank Abba For The Music at Bedworth Civic Hall on Saturday 21st October.

Anker Radio is a registered charity, and money raised will ensure that the hospital radio stays on the air for the patients, visitors and staff. The radio station is manned purely by volunteers and the team of around 38 people offer their time and energies for free.

Organiser, Merv Lawrence, Anker’s Outside Broadcast Manager is delighted to have brought this brilliant ABBA tribute act back to Warwickshire. Eighteen months ago, he arranged this same party-style show in aid of the Nuneaton Mayor’s Appeal and the charity Maggie’s Memories, which was a resounding success.

Great-tribute-to-Abba

Thank Abba For the Music, play to packed houses all around the UK and Europe. You may have spotted them on BBC1’s Happy Valley and they also recently performed for the Windsor Castle staff and families, although it’s not known if Her Majesty was boogying down to what is rumoured to be her favourite Abba song, Dancing Queen!

Anker Radio have been broadcasting for 38 years and just a year ago went online so can now be heard anywhere in the world. They know the importance of being there for the patients and staff at George Eliot Hospital however.

Organiser, Merv Lawrence said: “We are regarded as ‘a friend by the bedside.’ We are a dedicated hospital radio providing music, information, requests and special shows. We’re on air 24/7 and broadcast a breakfast show most mornings between 7-9am.

“We are a self funding charity. The money we raise pays for licence fees. Nobody gets paid one penny.  We also have a dedicated outside broadcasting team and raise 80% of funding required by hiring out to carnivals, fêtes, bonfire night events and so on, plus we we support other charities as well.”

Last year one of coach company DeCourcey named one of its newly refurbished buses  after Mervyn in honour of the work he does for the hospital radio and raising money for local charities.

The two-hour Thank Abba For The Music spectacular captures all the magic and excitement of one of the world’s most successful and entertaining live bands. With all your favourite Abba hits, fantastic music, vocals and harmonies, replica costumes and plenty of audience participation it promises to be a brilliant show.

Also the band is band is backed by an interactive video projection that depicts key moments  throughout ABBA’s musical career together with clips of interviews from celebrities and music experts alike.
