Seabourn ENCORE

Jane Wilson looks at how cruise lines are integrating wellness with their onboard programmes to attract the health conscious traveller.

Forget the confines of the traditional massage table, wooden sauna and crowded steam room, state of the art facilities and the latest treatments are making waves out at sea.

Wellness now flows from ship to shore with Zen-inspired health and fitness programmes onboard and inspiring land experiences to achieve that mind and body balance.

For those concerned about calories, MSC Cruises is attracting the weight watcher set by offering a themed cruise which includes consultations with Weight Watcher staff, seminars, cookery demonstrations with approved calorie monitored meals to tuck into while cruising without the weight and guilt. This cruise is aboard the MSC Divina.

If a salt relaxation room and ice waterfall appeals, jump aboard the MSC Meraviglia to enjoy the thermal suite of its Balinese-themed Aurea Spa. The cruise line is planning its “Wellness Experience by Technogym” to be available throughout its fleet for health conscious passengers.

Mindful living is the concept behind Seabourn Cruises’ wellness programme designed in partnership with integrative medicine practitioner Dr Andrew Weil and onboard Spa by Steiner. A “mindful living coach” leads classes such as yoga and meditation as well as giving inspiring talks and seminars from Weil’s books. And for those lucky enough, Dr Weil himself with host lectures during his annual Seabourn voyage.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has launched its exclusive “Seven Seas Wellness Tours” which include 10 Mediterranean ports.  Guests can test their form with a Tai Chi session in the Imperial Gardens of Marseille or enjoy the benefits of a hydrothermal pool in Sorrento. On a similar wave and with a touch of humour, Oceania Cruises has rolled out its range of Wellness Tours to include a laughter workshop in a Spanish farmhouse.

Holistic therapies and aromatherapy treatments feature as part of the new Italian-inspired Zàgara Beauty Spa on Silversea Cruises’ Silver Muse. This new facility adds to its “Wellness Expedition” voyages on Silver Discoverer where Pilates, water aerobics, nutritional counselling and yoga feature as components to their health programmes.

Having problems sleeping…. Celebrity Cruises together with onboard spa provider, Canyon Ranch, will be introducing a “Mindful Dreams” wellness programme which include spa treatments and lectures to help with sleep patterns onboard and at home.

As cruise lines adapt programmes and introduce new on-board facilities and treatments, more travellers are recognising cruising as a healthy choice. Forget buffets and sunbathing on deck, think Zen, mindfulness and even Weight Watchers! Cruising has become good for your health.
