The way the locals in the Czech Republic pronounce the term ‘Trdelník’ leaves many tourists merely pointing at the item on the menu or the plethora of spindles churning them out when they crave the pinnacle of sweet pastries. Indeed it is fresher smelling and far less commercialised than other similar western products.
Just by watching the Trdelník spinning to its ‘ready to eat’ status can get tongues wagging for sweetness. Even adults turn into kids when they see the Trdelník coming off the stove piping hot and ready to crunch. Some prefer to sit down and have Trdelník all civilised on a plate. However if you want to blend in with the local mannerisms, then be prepared to get your hands smothered in sugar!
You can accompany your Trdelník with ice cream fillings or toppings such as Nutella. However these additives are not necessary when the natural walnut and sugar taste of Trdelník is so divine. In terms of prices a Trdelník straight off the spindle is approximately 60 Czk ($2.50) or should you wish to sit down to treasure it then you can expect to pay 90 Czk ($3.50).
Taken in by Trdelník is a common theme in these neck of the woods. Perhaps the next step in evolution of this delicacy is to have it made in the letters of Trdelník to give one the perfect excuse to devour it further.
