Mumbai Memoir 56- Sunday lunch at ‘Barbeque Nation’!
Weekends are precious in a city like Mumbai, and when it rains outside, it is like a cherry on a cake, especially for people who love getting drenched in a downpour. Many Mumbai’kars visit the sea shores or promenade like Marine Drive, where huge waves from the Arabian sea hit the stones that barricade the shoreline. It’s a thrilling moment when the waves suddenly splash on the already drenched bodies from water that pours from the heavens above!
Last Sunday was a rain soaked day, just the way I like it. An added treat for me was a lunch invitation from one of my former student named Nivedita Pednekar. Nivedita studied Psychology under my mentorship and now works as a Senior Sales Executive with Air Mauritius. She had proposed me the lunch meet long back, but the ‘catching up’ finally happened now after 2 years! There were various restaurants to choose from, but knowing that I love non-vegetarian cuisines more than vegetarian ones, Nivedita zeroed on a restaurant called ‘Barbeque Nation’ at Worli.
As we had a prior booking done, we got the window table that gave the best view of the world outside. The pitter-patter of the raindrops on the window sill and the dance of the rough sea seen from between of two tall buildings across the road, set my mood for an interesting culinary adventure. The first thing that captured my attention was that every table at the restaurant has a live grille on it. The barbeque takes place right in front of your eyes! The waiters arrange for semi-cooked chunks of spicy chicken, mutton, prawns & fish on the iron rods which the customer has to swirl it to get the feel of enjoying a barbeque get together. We munched the delicacies as we heartily chatted about people, places and our respective lives. BN is a chain of restaurants across India that offers both vegetarian & non-vegetarian cuisines primarily highlighting Indian flavours.
Its very first outlet was established in Mumbai in the year 2006. Today there are 63 outlets across India, 5 of them in Mumbai itself! The menu has been divided into 5 main categories namely -Starters, Main Course, Salads, Desserts, Kulfi (milk based frozen sweet dish served on a stick) & Beverages. Being calorie conscious, I usually eat scantily, but last Sunday was a different day altogether. With the smell and visual presentation of good food around, one easily gets seduced to feast till one’s heart’s content! We ordered from non-vegetarian starters, desserts and beverage. I decided to skip the main course as my stomach was already full with all we had ordered that noon. To avoid too much hot & acidic feeling during and after that day’s lunch, we had timely ordered desserts & non-alcoholic beverages. With hospitable waiters around and good ambiance at the restaurant all in all it was an amazing experience at Barbeque Nation which certainly added value to our personal ‘catching up’ experience. I believe, a teacher creates a student and in the same process a student creates a teacher. Its mutual as we learn from each other and grow.
The warmth from the charcoal lit barbeque was seen mixing with the warmth that oozed out of our respective hearts as words of gratitude were been uttered for each other during the luncheon. The wild rain soaked sea view from the window, good food and warm company is an ultimate combination one would think to unwind on a Sunday afternoon. The quality of one’s life is measured with the number of good experiences one lives. Last Sunday’s luncheon at Barbeque Nation is certainly one such good experience that has been clicked by my mind camera to ‘savour’ for years to come!
