‘Congratulations, you’re a semi-finalist in the Masterspud potato recipe competition!’ the voice on the phone told me.
I had to travel to the Manchester Centre shopping mall, opposite their Big Wheel, to cook the recipe in front of a crowd, assisted by Jean Christophe Novelli!
leek-potato-soup07Before I started, I had to be wired up with a microphone, which was quite nice, having the Techie feed the wire inside my jumper! Sorry.
Surprisingly, once I started preparing my ingredients I didn’t feel nervous at all. In fact, I introduced Jean Christophe as my glamorous assistant!
Jean Christophe was very nice. When he found out that I could speak French he chatted to me for ages – in fact, the photographers had to tactfully tell him to get out of the way so they could take my photo!
It was a great experience and although I didn’t win (the public had to vote. Someone who worked in a huge office could email everyone and ask them all to vote. Rather unfair, I thought!) I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

Here’s my recipe.

1 lge or 2 small leeks, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1 knob butter
1 3/4lbs potatoes, chopped
1 small sweet potato, chopped.
2 pts water
1 tblsp curry powder
½ block coconut milk
1 tblsp dried basil
2 tblsp apricot jam
juice ½ lemon

Fry leaks & onion till soft.
Add everything else. Simmer till soft.
Blitz till smooth.
